Jebel Ali Port & Freezone is a key industrial and commercial hub located in the coastal district of Jebel Ali, south of Dubai. It hosts the largest marine terminal in the Middle East and ranks as the world’s ninth largest container port. Featuring the world’s largest man-made harbour, it accommodates ships of all sizes, supporting extensive global trade.
The port benefits from its integration within the Jebel Ali Free Zone, established in 1985. This free zone is home to over 7,000 companies engaged in manufacturing, trade, logistics, and various industrial and service sectors. It plays a vital role in Dubai’s economy, handling more than half of the emirate’s exports with a trade value of $69 billion and attracting over 20% of the UAE’s foreign direct investment. The business community here employs around 135,000 people.
Jebel Ali is predominantly industrial, with limited residential development. Jebel Ali Village, built in the 1970s for expatriate accommodation, offers affordable housing, though some residents have concerns about its condition. Recent years have seen renewed interest in residential projects, including plans for 80 apartment buildings along the Dubai Waterfront facing Palm Jebel Ali and the Veneto community, which features villas, townhouses, and low-rise apartments for lease.
Future developments include Downtown Jebel Ali, a large mixed-use community planned along Sheikh Zayed Road, offering plots for apartments, hotels, offices, and retail. While Jebel Ali remains primarily an industrial and commercial zone, ongoing projects indicate its gradual evolution into a more diverse urban area.
